why "pickleball"?
The origin of the name "pickleball" is a bit of a mystery, but there are a few theories. According to one popular story, the sport was invented in the 1960s by a group of families in Washington state who were looking for a new activity to play together. The game was originally played on a badminton court with improvised equipment, and one of the inventors' children reportedly compared the strange combination of elements to a "pickle boat" in rowing, where crew members from different boats are combined into a single team.
Another theory is that the name "pickleball" was inspired by the inventor's love of pickles, and that the ball-and-paddle game reminded them of the jarred pickles they enjoyed eating.
Regardless of the exact origin, the name "pickleball" has become synonymous with the sport and is now recognized around the world.
